English Grammar Lesson: When to Use A, An, and The Correctly

📘 Lesson: Articles in English (A, An, The)

Articles are small words we put before nouns. In English, we have two types of articles:

1️⃣ Indefinite Articles → A / AN

We use a and an when we talk about something not specific or mentioned for the first time.

A

Used before words that start with a consonant sound:
b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z.

Examples:

  • a book

  • a teacher

  • a car

  • a house

  • a dog

AN

Used before words that start with a vowel sound:
a, e, i, o, u
(or silent “h”)

Examples:

  • an apple

  • an egg

  • an umbrella

  • an orange

  • an idea

  • an hour (silent h)

When do we use A/AN?

  • He is an engineer.

  • I need an answer.

2️⃣ Definite Article → THE

We use THE when we talk about something:

✔ Something we mentioned before

Examples: When to use THE

✔ When both people know which thing

  • Close the door. (the only door in the room)
